SECTION A
[40 Marks]
Answer all questions in this section. All questions carry equal marks.
Question 1
A fun club donates to a children’s home annually. The amount given is increased by 8% yearly. If the donation in 2010 was $7,000.00, find the:
(a) Donation given in 2012
Solution:
2010 donation = $7,000.00
Increase for 2011 = 8% of $7,000 = $560.00
2011 donation = $7,560.00
Increase for 2012 = 8% of $7,560 = $604.80
2012 donation = $8,164.80
Answer: $8,164.80
(b) Total amount donated from 2010 to 2013
Solution:
2010 donation = $7,000.00
2011 donation = $7,560.00
2012 donation = $8,164.80
2013 donation = $8,818.00
Total = $7,000.00 + $7,560.00 + $8,164.80 + $8,818.00
Answer: $31,542.80
Question 2
Two cars X and Y start from a common point and travel in opposite directions. X travels at 60 km/h while Y travels at 80 km/h.
(a) Determine how far apart they will be after 3 hours.
Solution:
Distance travelled by X = 60 × 3 = 180 km
Distance travelled by Y = 80 × 3 = 240 km
Distance apart = 180 + 240
Answer: 420 km
(b) If the speed of X is increased by 20 km/h, what is the effect on the distance between X and Y?
Solution:
New speed of X = 80 km/h
Distance travelled by X = 80 × 3 = 240 km
Distance travelled by Y = 240 km
New total distance = 240 + 240 = 480 km
Increase in distance = 480 − 420 = 60 km
Answer: The distance increases by 60 km to 480 km.
(c) State the importance of considering speed when calculating total distance.
Speed directly determines the distance covered within a given time. Therefore, the speeds of moving objects must be considered to accurately calculate the total distance between them.
Question 3
Concrete blocks of length 14/25 m were laid end-to-end around a rectangular lawn measuring 28 m by 21 m.
(a) How many blocks were required?
Solution:
Perimeter = 2(28 + 21) = 98 m
Number of blocks = 98 ÷ 14/25
= 98 × 25/14
Answer: 175 blocks
(b) If each block costs GH₵1.80 and labour costs one-third of the cost of a block, find the total cost.
Solution:
Cost of blocks = GH₵1.80 × 175 = GH₵315.00
Cost of labour = ⅓ × GH₵1.80 × 175 = GH₵105.00
Total cost = GH₵315 + GH₵105
Answer: GH₵420.00
Question 4
In the diagram, MNPO is a circle with centre O. Given that:
- ∠MNO = y°
- ∠NEP = x°
- ∠NMP = (100 − x)°
- ∠NFP = 3x°
Find x and y.
Solution:
3x = y + (100 − x)
4x − y = 100 (1)
100 − x = x + y
2x + y = 100 (2)
Solving (1) and (2):
x = 25°
y = 50°
Answer: x = 25°, y = 50°
Question 5
A bowl contains red, green and black marbles. The number of red marbles is 3 more than the number of green marbles while the number of black marbles is 1 less than the number of green marbles. The probability of drawing a black marble is 1/4.
(a) Find the number of each colour.
Solution:
Let green marbles = g
Red marbles = g + 3
Black marbles = g − 1
Total marbles = 3g + 2
(g − 1)/(3g + 2) = 1/4
4(g − 1) = 3g + 2
g = 6
Green = 6
Red = 9
Black = 5
Answer: Green = 6, Red = 9, Black = 5
(b) Find the probability of drawing a marble that is not black.
Solution:
P(Not Black) = (6 + 9)/20
= 15/20
Answer: 3/4
SECTION B
[60 Marks]
Answer five questions only from this section.
Question 7
Mabel rode her bicycle for 45 minutes and then walked for 1 hour, covering a total distance of 10.4 km. The average cycling speed is three times the walking speed.
(a) Find the average cycling speed.
Answer: 9.6 km/h
(b) If the cycling speed increases by 20%, find the new cycling time.
Answer: 28.1 minutes
Question 8
(a) Find the equation of a line passing through K(-3,5) and parallel to 3x − 2y + 5 = 0.
Answer:
3x − 2y + 19 = 0
(b) Two consecutive even numbers are such that one-third of the larger exceeds one-fourth of the smaller by 7. Find the numbers.
Answer:
76 and 78
(c) Find the angle marked x in the circle diagram.
Answer:
x = 128°
Question 9
The angle of elevation of the top of a 75 m tower from a ship and a boat are 26.4° and 57.4° respectively.
Calculate the distance between the ship and the boat.
Solution:
BC = 75/tan57.4° = 47.96 m
AC = 75/tan26.4° = 151.09 m
AB = AC − BC
AB = 151.09 − 47.96
Answer: 103 m (3 s.f.)
Question 10
A sector of a circle has radius 18 cm and angle 120°.
Find the area of the sector.
Solution:
Area = (120/360) × (22/7) × 18²
= 339.43 cm²
Answer: 339.43 cm²
Question 11
The profit P made by a retailer is given by:
P = (3y² − 9)/(y − 2) − 18/(y − 2)
(a) If the profit is $16, determine the number of articles sold.
Answer:
y = 5 articles
(b) If no profit was made, determine the number of articles sold.
Answer:
y = 3 articles
Question 12
Solve:
(5 + x)/6 + (4x − 1)/3 ≥ (3x + 2)/5
Solution:
Multiply through by 30:
5(5 + x) + 10(4x − 1) ≥ 6(3x + 2)
45x + 15 ≥ 18x + 12
27x ≥ −3
x ≥ −1/9
Answer: x ≥ −1/9
