After the death of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), many Muslims who had memorized the Qur’an were killed during the Battle of Yamamah, which was fought against the false prophet Musaylimah. This caused great concern because there was a fear that if more memorizers died in future battles, parts of the Qur’an might be lost. ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab (R.A.) therefore advised Caliph Abu Bakr (R.A.) to compile the Qur’an into a single written manuscript. Although Abu Bakr was initially reluctant because the Prophet (ﷺ) had not done so during his lifetime, he later accepted the suggestion after realizing its importance. Abu Bakr appointed Zayd ibn Thabit (R.A.), one of the Prophet’s scribes, to lead the compilation. Zayd carefully collected the Qur’anic verses from written materials such as parchments, bones, palm stalks, leather, and from those who had memorized them. Every verse was verified by reliable witnesses before being included. In this way, the Qur’an was compiled into one complete manuscript and preserved for the Muslim community.

The Ansar proposed that one of them should become the leader, while the Muhajirun argued that the Khalifah should be chosen from the Quraysh tribe. Abu Bakr (R.A.) addressed the gathering and praised the virtues of the Ansar, but explained that the Arabs would only accept a leader from the Quraysh. He nominated Umar ibn al-Khattab (R.A.) and Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah (R.A.) for the position. However, Umar immediately pledged allegiance (Bay’ah) to Abu Bakr, recognizing him as the most qualified because he had been the Prophet’s closest companion and had led the Muslims in prayer during the Prophet’s final illness.
